​Autumn in the NC Mountains (5) // Sunrise at Price Lake // You’ll find the Julian Price Lake at milepost #297 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I had stumbled upon it the previous day, and the lighting wasn’t great. However, from what I could tell, morning might be the ticket. So I got up the next day before sunrise (something I hardly ever do), and headed to the lake. With the morning light increasing rapidly, I came around a bend in the road and the lake came into view. The hovering mist made me gasp out loud! I had the parking lot/overlook area to myself for the first half hour, but I spent close to an hour taking in the changing light and framing up different views. Glorious!

​Autumn in the NC Mountains (4) // Palate cleanser // Since before the Civil War, the Mast General Store has been stocking the goods their neighbors needed, popularizing the saying “If you can’t buy it here, you don’t need it.” These images were taken at the original store in Valle Crucis (pronounced “valley crew-sis”) or “the Valley of the Cross” (near Boone). Though Mast now operates a few more decidedly modern stores dotted throughout NC, SC, and VA, you owe yourself a visit to the original with its creaking wood floors, packed shelves, and even the local post office.
