A good reminder to make images of what you want and how you want.

Mountain Moods (7) // Back to the scanner - While I can’t recall exactly where this particular image was taken (some back road in NorCal or NV), I do remember the trip with @jeffdow_photography. We took advantage of a winter break while studying together at Brooks Institute to make a road trip from Santa Barbara to Lake Tahoe to visit his parents. We made lots of stops along the way including San Francisco (even staying the night on his sister’s sailboat), Reno, Tahoe, Bodie, and Mono Lake. We also encountered lots of snow and had to put chains on my El Camino for the first and only time. Jeff and I had a blast, and that’s all I really need to remember!
UPDATE: My traveling companion, Jeff Dow chimed in, and this is actually a rock and it's located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, between Emerald Bay and Tahoe City. When the storm cleared, these flowers appeared utterly refreshed and dancing in the glow of the setting sun.

This image is from a vantage point I have returned to over and over again: the porch of The Grove Park Inn in Asheville. This grand old hotel is magnificent in and of itself, but the views it offer never disappoint.

I'm honored to be part of a global community of photographers and artists that inspire me daily to see what they see. Today’s image is from the grounds of Ghost Ranch, NM—the former home and studio of artist Georgia O’Keefe. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) now operates It is a retreat and education center that anyone can visit. The ranch is surrounded by beautiful redrock cliffs such as these that are accentuated all the more during the golden light of sunset. (Image scanned from 35mm color transparency)

South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore is one such example. It is hard to ignore the sheer artistry and technique that went into its carving—especially given the massive scale and capabilities of the time (1927-1941). However beautiful, the sculpture at Mt. Rushmore is built on land that was illegally taken from the Sioux Nation in the 1870s. “A more ripe and rank case of dishonorable dealings will never, in all probability, be found in our history,’ stated the Supreme Court’s majority opinion that agreed the Black Hills had been stolen from the Sioux.” (United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians, 448 U.S. 371 (1980). American history is messy, and so goes the history of Mt. Rushmore. (Scanned image from transparency)

I took this image from the side of Hwy 395, where the flatlands and foothills lead the eye to the summit. (Scanned image from transparency)
